How would "once upon a time, there was a little boy called Peter” go? What story would it tell us?
Once upon a time, there was a little boy called Peter who loved to draw. He drew animals and trees and houses and monsters and aliens. And then he started adding words to his drawings to create elaborate stories that he shared with other people.
How did you find yourself in the pages of picture books?
As a boy, I loved examining the beautiful illustrations in the picture books that I read, and I realised that I wanted to create my own beautiful illustrations. Those books inspired me to practice drawing, and to exercise my imagination, and in doing so I discovered who I wanted to be.
When you create a story, do you ever try to transform the little child who will listen to your words and delight themselves with your illustrations? If so, how and what is your main purpose?
My hope is that after reading one of my stories, a child might think a little differently. Maybe they’ll read “The Curious Garden” and realise they have the power to make the world more beautiful. Maybe they’ll read “Fred Gets Dressed” and realise that it’s perfectly natural to explore and to experiment and to try new things. Maybe they’ll read “The Wild Robot” and realise that they can care deeply about all kinds of surprising characters, even robots. My hope is that my books will help readers be a little more open-minded.
If you could choose any existing book, which one would you have liked to have written/illustrated yourself?
I wish I had written and illustrated Where The Wild Things Are by Maurice Sendak. That book is perfect and gorgeous and it makes readers feel almost every emotion. It’s one of the books that made me want to be an author and illustrator.
If given the chance, who would you hug today?
If given the chance, I'd hug myself when I was a boy. Back then, I spent a lot of time worrying about the future, and I wish I could go back and tell myself that everything will work out just fine.

Como seria o "Era uma vez um menino chamado Peter”? Que história nos contaria?
Era uma vez um menino chamado Peter que gostava de desenhar. Ele desenhava animais e árvores e casas e monstros e alienígenas. E depois começou a acrescentar palavras aos seus desenhos para criar histórias elaboradas que partilhava com outras pessoas.
Como foste parar às páginas de um livro infantil?
Quando era criança, adorava examinar as belas ilustrações dos livros ilustrados que lia, e percebi que queria criar as minhas próprias belas ilustrações. Esses livros inspiraram-me a treinar o desenho, e a exercitar a minha imaginação, e ao fazê-lo descobri quem eu queria ser.
Quando crias uma história, tentas transformar a criança que vai ouvir as tuas palavras? Se sim, de que forma e qual o teu principal propósito?
A minha esperança é que depois de ler uma das minhas histórias, uma criança possa pensar um pouco diferente. Talvez eles leiam “The “Curious Garden e percebam que têm o poder de tornar o mundo mais belo. Talvez eles leiam "Fred Gets Dressed" e percebam que é perfeitamente natural explorar e experimentar e experimentar coisas novas. Talvez leiam “The Wild Robot” e se apercebam que podem preocupar-se profundamente com todos os tipos de personagens surpreendentes, mesmo robôs. A minha esperança é que os meus livros ajudem os leitores a terem uma mente um pouco mais aberta.
Dada a possibilidade de escolher qualquer um, que livro gostarias de ter escrito e ilustrado?
Quem me dera ter escrito e ilustrado “Onde Vivem os Monstros” de Maurice Sendak. Esse livro é perfeito e deslumbrante e faz com que os leitores sintam quase todas as emoções. É um dos livros que me fez querer ser autor e ilustrador.
Se pudesses, a quem darias um abraço apertado hoje?
Se me fosse dada a oportunidade, abraçava-me quando era rapaz. Nessa altura, passei muito tempo preocupado com o futuro, e gostaria de poder voltar atrás e dizer a mim mesmo que tudo iria correr bem.
