How would "once upon a time, there was a little boy called Matthew" go? What story would it tell us?
I think these are actually the stories I'm trying to tell with my picture books. The story is ongoing.
How did you find yourself in the pages of picture books?
I've always wanted to make picture books. For a while I was teaching kindergarten in Korea. And Korean picture books were so expressionistic and beautiful; I was really inspired to try to make my own eventually. I made some comic books; I worked in animation for a while and eventually I illustrated a few picture books. For me it is a wonderful combination of painting and storytelling.
When you create a story, do you ever try to transform the little child who will listen to your words and delight themselves with your illustrations? If so, how and what is your main purpose?
Honestly I think the audiences are so diverse for books, I can only try to please myself. And of course the hope is that if I enjoy it, others will too.
If you could choose any existing book, which one would you have liked to have written/illustrated yourself?
Uff, so many. Perhaps The Snowy Day, by Ezra Keats. It so perfectly captures an abstract feeling and a moment.
If you could, who would you hug today?
Any willing dog. A basset hound, preferably.

Eu acho que são precisamente essas as histórias que estou a tentar contar através dos meus livros ilustrados. A história é um ato contínuo.
Como é que foste parar às páginas de um livro infantil?
Sempre quis fazer livros ilustrados. Durante uns tempos trabalhei como educador infantil na Coreia. E os livros ilustrados coreanos eram tão expressivos e belos; acabei por me sentir realmente inspirado para tentar fazer os meus próprios. Fiz algumas bandas desenhadas; trabalhei em animação durante uns tempos e mais tarde até ilustrei alguns livros infantis. Para mim é uma combinação fantástica de pintura e narrativa.
Quando crias uma história, tentas transformar a criança que vai ouvir as tuas palavras e deliciar-se com as tuas ilustrações? Se sim, de que forma e qual o teu principal propósito?
Honestamente, acho que o público leitor é tão diverso que apenas posso tentar agradar-me a mim próprio. E, claro, a esperança é que se eu apreciar, os outros também o farão.
Dada a possibilidade de escolher qualquer um, que livro gostarias de ter escrito/ilustrado?
Uff, tantos. Talvez Um Dia de Neve, de Ezra Keats. Captura de forma tão perfeita um sentimento abstrato e um momento.

Qualquer cão interessado. Um basset hound, de preferência.
