Who are you, Catarina?
I am a Taurus native, born in April 1991. I am a dreamy, altruistic, loyal, friendly and perfectionist woman: I give the most of me in all the causes I embrace. Nothing comforts me more than the feeling of a "fulfilled duty" when I know that I did something good, that I helped someone (in whatever way) and that I left (or leave) my positive mark on the lives of people who cross my path.
As Fernando Pessoa once said "I have within me all the dreams of the world". The dream of a better world... without injustice, corruption, evil and disrespect. The dream of a planet well cared for and prosperous in natural resources. The dream of a world without wars, economic interests, hunger and extreme poverty. Utopian dreams, I know... but ones that give me a glimmer of hope in the actions of the next generations.
Not only for this, but also for this reason, I have chosen as my "life mission" to be an Early Childhood Educator... such a fulfilling profession which allows me to "sow a seed" of the ideals I believe in in the children who cross my path. I know that I hold in my hands a responsibility as big as the world, but I also know that this is (and always will be) one of the greatest challenges throughout my life. I know I made the right choice and every day I fall a little bit more in love with the path I have chosen.
As a reading promoter in children you come across, how do you choose each of the books in which you travel with them and what do you try to offer them during story time?
Books entered my life from a very early age. I remember my father telling me a story every night. No, it wasn't a bedtime story... or maybe it was, but I never fell asleep! They were stories filled with fantasy, magical illustrations and fascinating theatrical performances. I would get so caught up in that web of events that my imagination would fly and fly... and it was impossible to fall asleep like that!
I also remember going with my grandfather, every Sunday, to the local bookshop to choose a book. I had a huge collection, which I cared for as if it was worth gold. And I read, read, read without stopping... until I lost myself among the sentences and found myself in new settings. Something that has been perpetuated throughout my life. That's what I think about when I take a book to my children: I want to encourage them to love literature, since ever... forever.
When I choose a book, I try, above all, to give them the experiences I had as a child. The love of reading, caring for "THE" book and the countless journeys we can make inside a story.
Thus, when I choose a book, I always try to meet their interests and needs, while always taking into account some characteristics appropriate to their ages. I mostly opt for books that are interactive, with simple but beautiful and captivating illustrations and short text with important messages. Above all, I look for books that catch their attention (I'm a fan of pop-up books, for example) and that allow them to be an integral part of the story itself and of the storytime moment.
How do you bring each story to life?
I always try to "get inside" the story, just like my father did. To get to know the characters, their personality and their mission in that story... so I can bring them to life in the best way possible.
I try, essentially, to captivate my audience... and I confess that I get (very) frustrated when I can't do it as effectively as I would like. I especially use theatricality, voice changes, suspense... the surprise!
But, for me, it is in bringing the stories to life WITH children that everything makes sense! When they participate, tell the story with me, interact, respond... my whole heart fills with joy: it is really comforting!
What do you remember and/or strikes you most about the little ones' reactions to each new book?
The smiles. The surprise. The amazement. The joy with which they welcome new stories melts any heart. The curiosity they show in discovering what is hidden in each page. It's a whole mixture of good emotions!
And for me, as a lover of children's books, it's an inexplicable feeling to receive a new book! I always feel like an (eternal) child waiting to open a present!
Of all the picture books you’ve handled, which is the one that caused the biggest impression on you? Why or in which way?
It’s always a challenge to answer questions like: "what is your favourite book?" or "what books would you include in your top 10?". They are so many and so good, that it is impossible to choose.
However, there’s one that holds a special place in my heart for the positive and transforming impact it had on one of my groups: "We’re Going on a Bear Hunt", by Michael Rosen and Helen Oxenbury, published by Caminho.
Interestingly, I recently shared it on my Instagram page and my YouTube channel, in a "special book" sharing challenge running during the month of April: the book month by excellence.
This book turned out to be special for that group, it was the most requested story, the one they all knew by heart, the one they all loved! Every day I heard: "Tataína, the bear!", and off we went, all together, on this adventure! Soon these moments became a joint reading: the children would complete my sentences, anticipate and make the corresponding gestures... it was fascinating! We usually listened and told the story together, with the book and, at the end, there was the typical "more", "another time!”... and yes, there was always a double take! We would get off the carpet and go all the way round, this time in motion! It was magical, so magical that they still remember it today... and that makes me feel it was (really) worth it!

My paternal grandmother, who unfortunately has already left, but who I miss so much... every day.

Quem és tu, Catarina?
Eu sou uma nativa de Touro, nascida em abril de 1991. Sou uma mulher sonhadora, altruísta, leal, amiga e perfecionista: entrego-me de corpo e alma a todas as causas que abraço. Nada mais me conforta do que a sensação de “dever cumprido” ao saber que fiz o bem, que ajudei alguém (seja de que forma for) e que deixei (ou deixo) a minha marca positiva na vida das pessoas que por mim passam.
Como nos disse um dia Fernando Pessoa: “Tenho em mim todos os sonhos do mundo”. O sonho de um mundo melhor… sem injustiças, corrupção, maldade e desrespeito. O sonho de um planeta cuidado e próspero em riquezas naturais. O sonho de um mundo sem guerras, interesses económicos, fome e pobreza extrema. Sonhos utópicos, eu sei… mas que me deixam uma réstia de esperança nas ações das próximas gerações.
Não só por isso, mas também por isso, escolhi como “missão de vida” ser educadora de infância… uma profissão tão rica e que me permite “deixar uma semente” dos ideais em que acredito nas crianças que passam por mim. Sei que tenho nas mãos uma responsabilidade do tamanho do Mundo, mas sei também que esse é (e sempre será) um dos meus maiores desafios ao longo da vida. Sei que fiz a escolha certa e apaixono-me um bocadinho, todos os dias, pelo caminho que escolhi.
Enquanto promotora da leitura nas crianças com que te cruzas, como eleges cada um dos livros em que viajas com elas e o que procuras proporcionar-lhes na hora do conto?
Foi desde muito cedo que os livros entraram na minha vida. Recordo-me de o meu pai, todas as noites, me contar uma história. Não, não era uma história para adormecer… ou talvez até fosse, mas isso nunca acontecia! Eram histórias recheadas de fantasia, ilustrações mágicas e teatralizações fascinantes. Ficava de tal forma embrenhada naquela teia de acontecimentos, que a minha imaginação voava e voava… e era impossível adormecer assim!
Lembro-me também de ir com o meu avô, todos os domingos, até à livraria local para escolher um livro. Tinha uma grande coleção, estimada como se valesse ouro. E lia, lia, lia sem parar… até me perder por entre as frases e me encontrar em novos cenários. Algo que se perpetuou ao longo de toda a minha vida.
É muito nisso que penso quando levo um livro até às minhas crianças: quero fomentar-lhes o amor pela literatura, desde sempre… para sempre.
Quando elejo um livro procuro, acima de tudo, proporcionar-lhes as vivências que tive enquanto criança. O gosto pela leitura, o cuidado para com “O” livro e as inúmeras viagens que podemos fazer dentro das histórias.
Assim, quando elejo um livro, tento sempre ir ao encontro dos seus interesses e necessidades, bem como ter em conta algumas características adequadas às suas idades. Opto, maioritariamente, por livros que sejam interativos, com ilustrações simples, mas simultaneamente belas e cativantes; texto reduzido mas com mensagens importantes. Acima de tudo, procuro livros que lhes captem a atenção (sou fã de livros pop-up, por exemplo) e que lhes permitam ser parte integrante da história em si e do momento da hora do conto.
Como dás vida a cada história?
Tento sempre “entrar” dentro dela, tal e qual o meu pai fazia. Conhecer as personagens, a sua forma de ser e a sua missão naquela história... para poder dar-lhes vida da melhor forma.
Procuro, essencialmente, cativar as crianças… e confesso que fico (muito) frustrada quando não o consigo fazer com a eficácia que pretendia. Uso especialmente as teatralizações, as mudanças na voz, o suspense… a surpresa!
Mas, para mim, é ao dar vida às histórias COM as crianças que tudo faz sentido! Quando elas participam, contam a história comigo, interagem, respondem… todo o meu coração se enche de alegria: é mesmo reconfortante!
O que recordas e/ou te marca mais nas reações dos mais pequenos a cada livro novo?
Os sorrisos. A surpresa. O espanto. A alegria com que acolhem as novas histórias derrete qualquer coração. A curiosidade que demonstram em descobrir o que se esconde em cada página. É todo um misto de emoções boas!
E para mim, que sou uma amante de livros infantis, é uma sensação inexplicável receber um livro novo! Sinto-me sempre uma (eterna) criança expectante para abrir um presente!
De todos os livros infantis que já te passaram pelas mãos, qual o que teve um impacto mais transformador? Porquê?
É sempre um desafio responder a perguntas como: “qual o teu livro preferido?” ou “que livros colocarias no teu top 10?”. São tantos e tão bons, que acaba por ser impossível escolher.
No entanto, há um que ocupa um lugar especial no meu coração pelo impacto tão positivo e transformador que teve num dos meus grupos: “Vamos à Caça do Urso”, de Michael Rosen e Helen Oxenbury, editado pela Caminho.
Curioso que o partilhei recentemente na minha página de Instagram e no meu canal de YouTube, num desafio de partilhas de “livro especiais” a decorrer durante o mês de abril: o mês do livro por excelência. Este livro acabou por se tornar especial para aquele grupo, era a história mais pedida, a que todos sabiam de cor, com que todos vibravam! Todos os dias ouvia: “Tataína, o urso!”, e lá íamos nós, todos juntos, embarcar nesta aventura! Depressa estes momentos se tornaram numa leitura conjunta: as crianças completavam as minhas frases, antecipavam e faziam os gestos respetivos... era fascinante! Por norma, ouvíamos e contávamos a história em conjunto, com o livro e, no final, havia o típico “mais”, “outa vez!”... e sim, havia sempre dose dupla! Saíamos do tapete e lá íamos nós fazer todo o percurso, desta vez em movimento! Era mágico, tão mágico que ainda hoje se recordam… e isso faz-me sentir que valeu (realmente) a pena!
