How would "once upon a time, there was a little girl called Amy" go? What story would it tell us?
There once was a little girl named Amy with big eyes that were constantly watching and looking at every single thing in the world. She was a little baffled, a bit amused, and slightly overwhelmed by it all. She would do almost anything for a good story. She wanted to listen to stories, look at stories, read stories, draw stories, collect stories, open the door and crawl into a story, slice into a story and spread hot butter and jam onto it and eat it for a snack, and then snuggle up to it and go to sleep and dream of stories.
Stories helped her make sense of the world. She was never alone if she had a story and a book.
How did you find yourself in the pages of picture books?
I always wanted to make picture books. I love image and words and the way they can chase each other around and have a conversation on the page. I love the images I get in my brain when I hear or read interesting compelling words or sentences. I feel a compulsion to draw what stories are in my head. It's as simple as that.
When you create a story, do you ever try to transform the little child who will listen to your words and delight themselves with your illustrations? If so, how and what is your main purpose?
I don’t think my goal has ever been to transform a child. In the books that I have written, I would say my goal is that the reader be even more themselves. In the case of a biography, I hope my goal is to open a new world. Books are an incredible opportunity to learn about others and increase empathy. For the most part I think of making a book as crafting an object, a narrative, less about teaching the reader. In fact I want the reader to come to their own conclusions about any book I make - especially the ones I write. I want them to add their own spin and spark. My purpose is to create an imaginative visual journey.
If you could choose any existing book, which one would you have liked to have written/illustrated yourself?

These are books that I love and come back to, but even loving these books, I know that I would never have illustrated or written these books in the same way because they are them and I am me.
I am usually drawn to work that someone can do much better than me and also books that are never something that I could have thought of. Books that sort of stop me in my tracks and show me a new world or a new thought that I never could have come to on my own.
If given the chance, who would you hug today?
My Grandparents, my dogs, my kids and husband. Probably a bear. I know I shouldn't and it would be a very bad idea… but that is the truth and you asked!

Como seria o "Era uma vez uma menina chamada Amy”? Que história nos contaria?
Era uma vez uma menina chamada Amy com grandes olhos que observavam e olhavam constantemente para todas as coisas do mundo. Ela sentia-se perplexa, ligeiramente divertida, e um pouco sobrecarregada com tudo. Fazia quase tudo por uma boa história. Queria ouvir histórias, olhar para histórias, ler histórias, desenhar histórias, colecionar histórias, abrir a porta e rastejar para dentro de uma história, cortar uma história em pedaços e espalhar manteiga quente e geleia sobre ela e comê-la ao lanche, e depois aconchegar-se a ela e ir dormir e sonhar com histórias. As histórias ajudaram-na a dar sentido ao mundo. Ela nunca estava sozinha se tivesse uma história e um livro.
Como foste parar às páginas de um livro infantil?
Sempre quis fazer livros infantis. Adoro imagem e palavras e a forma como se podem perseguir umas às outras e ter uma conversa na página. Adoro as imagens que surgem no meu cérebro quando ouço ou leio palavras ou frases interessantes e cativantes. Sinto uma compulsão para desenhar as histórias que estão na minha cabeça. É tão simples como isso.
Quando crias uma história, tentas transformar a criança que vai ouvir as tuas palavras e deliciar-se com as tuas ilustrações? Se sim, de que forma e qual o teu principal propósito?
Penso que o meu objectivo nunca foi transformar uma criança. Nos livros que escrevi, eu diria que o meu objectivo é que o leitor seja ainda mais ele próprio. No caso de uma biografia, espero que o meu objectivo seja o de abrir um novo mundo. Os livros são uma oportunidade incrível para aprender sobre os outros e aumentar a empatia.
Em grande parte, penso sobre fazer um livro como a criação de um objecto, uma narrativa, menos sobre ensinar o leitor. De facto, quero que o leitor chegue às suas próprias conclusões sobre qualquer livro que eu faça - especialmente aqueles que eu escrevo. Quero que acrescentem o seu próprio toque pessoal.
O meu propósito é criar uma viagem imaginativa visual.

Estes são livros que adoro e aos quais volto, mas mesmo amando estes livros, sei que nunca os teria ilustrado ou escrito livros da mesma forma porque eles são eles e eu sou eu.
Sou normalmente atraída para trabalho que alguém pode fazer muito melhor do que eu e também para livros nos quais eu nunca pudesse ter pensado. Livros que, de certa forma, me fazem parar e me mostram um novo mundo ou um novo pensamento a que nunca poderia ter chegado por mim própria.
Se pudesses, a quem darias um abraço apertado hoje?
Os meus avós, os meus cães, os meus filhos e o meu marido. Provavelmente, um urso. Eu sei que não devia e seria uma péssima ideia... mas essa é a verdade e vocês perguntaram!
