How would "once upon a time, there was a little boy called Christopher" go? What story would it tell us?
He was an only child and liked to draw and play instruments and create stories. Though he loved his time with friends, he only felt truly comfortable in his room making his creations.
How did you find yourself in the pages of picture books?
I studied music and then journalism and advertising at my University. I was playing in bands and working as a graphic designer when I decided to move from Colorado to New York. It was there that I met illustrators and realized that illustration was something I could do.
When you create a story, do you ever try to transform the little child who will listen to your words and delight themselves with your illustrations? If so, how and what is your main purpose?
I don’t think I would want to transform a child but I hope that my pictures speak to their curiosity and inner voice. My biggest hope is that as adults, these children look back at my books and my pictures and feel they somehow shaped who they are as a person and how they view the world.
If you could choose any existing book, which one would you have liked to have written/illustrated yourself?
One of my favorite books is “Frederick” by Leo Lionni. It’s perfect and I wish I had made it.
If given the chance, who would you hug today?
Loved ones who are no longer with us. I wish I could get a big bear hug from my grandfather.

Como seria o "Era uma vez um menino chamado Christopher”? Que história nos contaria?
Ele era filho único e gostava de desenhar e tocar instrumentos e criar histórias. Embora adorasse o seu tempo com os amigos, só se sentia verdadeiramente confortável no seu quarto, a fazer as suas criações.
Como foste parar às páginas de um livro infantil?
Estudei música e depois jornalismo e publicidade na minha Universidade. Tocava em bandas e trabalhava como designer gráfico quando decidi mudar-me do Colorado para Nova Iorque. Foi lá que conheci ilustradores e percebi que ilustração era algo que eu podia fazer.
Quando crias uma história, tentas transformar a criança que vai ouvir as tuas palavras e deliciar-se com as tuas ilustrações? Se sim, de que forma e qual o teu principal propósito?
Acho que não gostaria de transformar uma criança, mas espero que as minhas imagens falem à sua curiosidade e voz interior. A minha maior esperança é que, enquanto adultos, estas crianças olhem para os meus livros e as minhas imagens e sintam que de alguma forma estes moldaram quem são enquanto pessoas e a forma como vêem o mundo.
Dada a possibilidade de escolher qualquer um, que livro gostarias de ter escrito e ilustrado?
Um dos meus livros preferidos é “Frederico” de Leo Lionni. É perfeito e adorava ter sido eu a fazê-lo.
